Since the declaration of 2021-2030 as the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the Decade has become the first initative that focuses on enhancing the role of ocean science towards the achievement of sustainable development.
GESAMP and its sponsoring Organizations agreed that GESAMP's role, as a UN interagency mechanism, is not only appropriate but also pivotal in terms of its contribution to the Decade. It has therefore carried out a mapping exercise of its ongoing activities against the goals of the Decade which clearly demonstrate the Group's contribution to the initiative and is structured around seven desired outcomes and specific identified challenges. For more information on GESAMP's work plan in the context of the Decade outcomes, challenges and objectives please see here.
During its 49th session, GESAMP set up a task team to formalize its contributions to the Decade by exploring the possibility to become of the Decade Advisory Board, encourage its Members to register in the Decade Expert Roster and to explore ways that GESAMP can support the Decade Secretariat in its strategic ambition setting process. This activity is ongoing and more Members have been invited to join the Task Team.
